HEADLINE: Believe it or not, a spell of predicted gusty winds is set to accompany the dry, very warm/hot, humid and mainly sunny/clear spell of weather during tomorrow/Thursday and Friday morning. The direction of the gusty winds is a little unusual in that they will be blowing in from between the northeast and southeast, although mainly from the east, and the location of the impacts are little unusual too, as they are expected to mainly occur on the WESTERN side of high ground, especially coasts, moors and hills, including the WESTERN side of Bodmin Moor, Dartmoor and Exmoor, so a wind warning has been issued for these gusty winds with a MEDIUM likelihood of LOW impacts (yellow level).

ONE WIND WARNING now issued
1. Valid from 00:00 Thursday (ie midnight tonight) 27 until 12:00 Friday 28 June and currently for Exmoor in Avon and Somerset, all of Cornwall and Isles of Scilly (IoS), and parts of west, north and south Devon – at MEDIUM LIKELIHOOD/LOW IMPACTS (yellow level). This warning is attached, below and available here.

Until 00:00 midnight tonight: Increasingly blustery winds blowing in from between the east and northeast. Dry with the cloudy continuing to thin and break allowing bright/sunny spells and clear spells this evening. At this stage, no impacts expected from this weather.

Between 00:00 (midnight tonight) and 12:00 Friday – during the wind warning: Dry. Becoming warmer and more humid, with a mix of spells of strong sunshine and clear spells. Very gusty winds forecast to blow in from between the northeast and southeast, although mainly from the east, across coasts, moors and hills, including Bodmin Moor, Dartmoor and Exmoor. The location of the impacts are little unusual too, as they are expected to mainly occur on the WESTERN side of high ground. The peak of the winds are forecast to reach Force 6 or Force 7, possibly Gale Force 8, along coasts exposed to these winds. Highest gusts expected around WESTERN side of IoS, coasts, hills and moors at around 45 to 50, possibly 55mph. Gusts 30 to 40mph elsewhere.
There is a medium likelihood of low impacts from these winds.

POTENTIAL LOW impacts from STRONG WINDS:

• Fallen tree debris and a few fallen trees likely (as trees are in full leaf), which may cause travel disruption through blocked even closed roads, bringing down power cables etc
• Some localised delays likely to public transport, and road, rail, sea/ferry and air journey times could take longer, and a few services may be cancelled
• Likely delays for high-sided and towed vehicles on exposed routes and bridges, with possible bridge restrictions
• Likely some local short term loss of power and other services
• Likely to impact outdoor/sporting activities and events too, by affecting temporary structures for example, tents, gazebos, marquees, bouncy castles, trampolines, inflatables on open water etc along with bins, wooden fences, sheds etc
• May result in big waves on east facing coasts and beaches, which may present a hazard for the public, especially at high tide
